A ritual dance takes place every year at the Royal Ballet press conference to introduce the new season's programme. Someone asks "Have you any plans soon to appoint a music director". No - no plans comes the answer. Silence. Next question.
But there are follow-up questions. Who makes music policy? (because there is a default policy) Who decides on conductors? Who decides on the musical coherence of mixed bills? Who decides on commissioning new scores, or not commissioning them? Does Tony Pappano have a voice? Or Tony Hall?
