Dance Now - Summer 2007

I've re-interviewed Barry Wordsworth for Dance Now.

Wordsworth had previously been music director from 1990-’95. Anthony Dowell had brought him to the Opera House to address the discrepancy in the orchestra’s performances for opera and ballet. While Wordsworth made progress with the orchestra, he concedes now that his relationships with some dancers at the time were difficult, even ‘prickly’. ‘I felt relatively isolated. Although I had a mission to improve the company’s musical integrity, some people were not particularly able - or interested - to see various questions from my point of view. I felt a need to stand up for the music, as I saw it, with a stringency that made more enemies than friends’
