From my piece in the autumn edition of Dance Now:
Dance is now a rarity on television, scheduled – if at all - in marginal slots, with perhaps the exception of a classical ballet at Christmas. Commissioning editors on the major channels are deterred by the size of the potential audience. Producers of dance for the camera complain that there is little feedback, a lack of informed discussion of their work, and that dance critics care only about dance in the theatre.
The image is from Rhythm is it by Thomas Grube and Enrique Sánchez Lansch, a documentary about a community dance project in Berlin. Two hundred and fifty children, some of them deeply disaffected, were recruited for a performance of Sacre, choreographed by Royston Maldoom, with Simon Rattle conducting the Berlin Phil.
I hope to write about Rhythm is it next month. It's a powerful film and it deserves a release here.
