Rudi Van Dantzig's Tuin van Eros
"It's like a person signalling from a boat. You make clear signals across huge distances to someone you may not know and may never meet." This is Van Dantzig's claim for the particular communicative quality of dance. He is weakened by his cancer and has disabling spells of depression. At one point he shows his two dancers a photograph of two GIs in Vietnam, one holding the other in a tight embrace. He asks them to recreate the texture of that hold. He remembers his sense of isolation in childhood: "I was lonely - the image of being held was very compelling for me."
